Oshima tsumugi
- Authentic (honba) Oshima tsumugi is a famous traditional craft product with a long, proud history from Kagoshima Prefecture’s Amami Oshima Island.
- Oshima tsumugi’s origins date back to 1800, and it is said to be the woven material with the longest history in all of Japan.
- The process of creating Oshima tsumugi involves more than 30 separate steps and can require up to nearly half a year from the initial planning stage to the final woven product. The various processes also demand extremely complex and advanced techniques from skilled craftspeople.
- Products and techniques have continued to develop during this item’s long history, leading to the development of characteristics such as elaborate kasuri patterns, lightness, warmth, silkiness and durability, etc.
- Today’s Oshima tsumugi is available in an increasingly rich variety of colors, patterns and textures, etc., and it is used to create not only kimonos but also various products such as western clothing, interior decorations and accessories.
